Numbers 10:22

Posted on 4 December 2023
Listen to this article

“And the standard of the camp of the children of Ephraim set forward according to their armies: and over his host was Elishama the son of Ammihud.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and is primarily concerned with the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. It provides an account of their experiences in the wilderness and the organisation of the camp.

The Camp of the Children of Ephraim:In Numbers 1:32-33, during the census of the Israelites, it is recorded that the tribe of Ephraim had 40,500 men of war eligible for military service. In Numbers 2, God instructed Moses to organise the tribes into specific arrangements around the tabernacle as they traveled through the wilderness. Each tribe had its own position and standard or banner.

Setting Forward According to Their Armies:When the Israelites camped, they did so in an orderly arrangement. They were to move and set forward according to the leading of the Lord. Numbers 10:13-28 describes the order of movement for the tribes. This verse specifically mentions that the camp of the children of Ephraim set forward according to their armies.

Elishama, the Son of Ammihud:Elishama, the son of Ammihud, was appointed to be over the host or the military forces of the tribe of Ephraim. He held a position of leadership and authority in the tribe. Although not much else is known about Elishama specifically, his appointment highlights the organisation and structure within the Israelite camp.

Lessons from Numbers 10:22:

  • Order and Organisation:The camp of the Israelites demonstrated a structured and orderly arrangement. This teaches us the importance of organisation and coordination within any community or group of people.
  • Leadership and Responsibility:Elishama’s appointment as the leader over the host of Ephraim reminds us of the significance of leadership roles. It emphasises the need for capable individuals to take up positions of responsibility and lead others effectively.
  • Following God’s Guidance:The Israelites moved and set forward based on God’s leading. It serves as a reminder for us to seek God’s guidance and direction in our own lives, following His will rather than relying on our own understanding.

In conclusion, Numbers 10:22 sheds light on the order and organisation within the Israelite camp, specifically focusing on the movement of the camp of Ephraim and the leadership role of Elishama. It reminds us of the importance of order, leadership, and following God’s guidance in our lives.
