Listen to this article

"And Moses said unto the LORD, Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me?"

This verse is part of a larger passage found in Numbers 11, which describes the Israelites’ complaints in the wilderness and Moses’ response. In this particular verse, Moses is expressing his frustration and burden to the Lord.

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and continues the historical account of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. At this point, the Israelites have been wandering in the wilderness for some time and have begun to complain about their hardships.

Moses’ Complaint:In Numbers 11:11, Moses addresses the Lord, expressing his anguish and questioning why he has been burdened with the responsibility of leading the Israelites. It reveals his vulnerability and frustration as he feels overwhelmed by the weight of caring for the entire nation.

The Burden of Leadership:Moses had been chosen by God to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. He faced numerous challenges, including dealing with the people’s complaints, managing disputes, and leading them through the wilderness. The burden of leadership and the people’s constant demands took a toll on Moses.

Seeking God’s Understanding:In his plea to the Lord, Moses seeks understanding and reassurance. He questions why he has not found favour in God’s sight and wonders why he has been afflicted with the responsibility of caring for the entire nation. It shows his honesty before God and his desire for God’s presence and guidance.

God’s Response:After Moses expresses his frustration, the Lord responds in Numbers 11:12-17, providing a solution by instructing Moses to gather seventy elders to share the burden of leadership. God assures Moses that He will provide for the people and gives them quail as a sign of His provision.

Lessons from Numbers 11:11:

  • Honesty before God:Moses’ example teaches us that it is acceptable to be honest with God about our feelings and frustrations. We can bring our burdens before Him, knowing that He is compassionate and understanding.
  • Leadership challenges:Moses’ experience highlights the challenges of leadership. It reminds us that leadership can be burdensome and overwhelming at times, but God is always there to provide support and guidance.
  • God’s provision:Although Moses felt burdened, God heard his plea and provided a solution. This passage reminds us that God is aware of our struggles and will provide for our needs in His perfect timing.

Overall, Numbers 11:11 portrays Moses’ emotional state and his honesty before God. It teaches us the importance of seeking God’s understanding in times of difficulty and relying on His provision and guidance.
