Numbers 11:34

Posted on 6 December 2023
Listen to this article

"And he called the name of that place Kibroth-hattaavah: because there they buried the people that lusted."

Context:Numbers 11:34 is part of the account of the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness after their deliverance from Egypt. In this chapter, the people of Israel had been complaining about their hardships in the wilderness and expressing their dissatisfaction with the manna that God had provided as their daily sustenance. They longed for the variety of food they had in Egypt, even though they were enslaved there.

Lesson 1: The Consequences of Complaining

The verse reveals the consequences of the Israelites’ continuous complaining and lusting after things they did not have. God responded to their discontentment by sending a severe plague to the camp. Many people died as a result of their rebellious attitude and dissatisfaction. This incident serves as a warning to us about the dangers of ungratefulness, discontentment, and complaining. It is essential to cultivate an attitude of gratitude and contentment in our lives, even in challenging circumstances.

Lesson 2: Naming the Place

Moses named the place where the Israelites buried the people who lusted “Kibrothhattaavah,” which means “graves of craving” or “graves of lust.” The name serves as a reminder of the consequences of their sinful desires and discontentment. Naming the place was significant because it would remind future generations of the dangers of yielding to uncontrolled cravings and the need to trust in God’s provision.

Lesson 3: God’s Faithfulness and Grace

Despite the Israelites’ complaining and rebellion, God continued to provide for them. He sustained them with manna throughout their journey and met their needs. This shows God’s faithfulness and grace even in the face of human failings. It is a reminder that, despite our shortcomings, God remains faithful to His promises and is always ready to provide for our needs. We should learn to rely on His provision and trust in His faithfulness rather than giving in to discontentment and complaining.

Application:

  • Cultivate an attitude of gratitude:Rather than focusing on what we lack or what we desire, let us count our blessings and be thankful for God’s provisions in our lives.
  • Trust in God’s provision:When faced with challenges or dissatisfaction, let us trust that God is aware of our needs and will provide for us according to His perfect will.
  • Guard against complaining:Complaining and discontentment can poison our hearts and lead to harmful consequences. Instead, let us bring our concerns and desires to God in prayer and trust Him to work things out in His way and timing.
  • Learn from the past:Reflect on the mistakes of the Israelites and the consequences they faced. Let us not repeat their errors but strive to live a life that pleases God and aligns with His will.

Remember, the Bible is a rich source of wisdom and guidance for our lives. May we continually study and apply its teachings to grow in our relationship with God and live according to His principles.
