Numbers 12:12

Posted on 13 December 2023
Listen to this article

“Let her not be as one dead, of whom the flesh is half consumed when he cometh out of his mother’s womb.”

This verse is spoken by Moses as he intercedes on behalf of Miriam, who has been struck with leprosy as a consequence of speaking against Moses and questioning his authority. To understand the significance of this verse, let’s examine the context:

In Numbers 12, Miriam and Aaron challenge Moses’ unique role as God’s chosen prophet. They criticize him for marrying a Cushite woman and suggest that God also speaks through them. In response to their rebellion, God confronts them and afflicts Miriam with leprosy, turning her skin “white as snow.”

Moses, deeply concerned for his sister, immediately pleads with God to heal her. In Numbers 12:12, Moses appeals to God’s mercy:asking that Miriam not be left in a condition resembling a stillborn child whose flesh is already consumed when it is born prematurely. It is an expression of Moses’ earnest plea for her restoration and preservation.

This verse serves as a reminder of Moses’ love and concern for his sister, despite her rebellion. It also highlights the power of Moses’ intercession:on behalf of Miriam, demonstrating his role as a mediator between God and His people.

Additionally, this passage offers important lessons about the consequences of speaking against God-appointed leaders and the need for humility:Miriam’s punishment emphasizes the seriousness of challenging God’s chosen authority and the importance of respecting those whom He has placed in positions of leadership.
