Numbers 12:9

Listen to this article

“And the anger of the Lord was kindled against them; and he departed.”

This verse is part of a narrative in the book of Numbers that recounts an incident involving Moses, his sister Miriam, and his brother Aaron. In the preceding verses, Miriam and Aaron had spoken against Moses because of his Cushite wife and questioned whether God had only spoken through Moses or also through them. In response to their criticism, God intervened and called the three of them to the tent of meeting.

In Numbers 12:9, we see that the anger of the Lord was kindled against Miriam and Aaron for their disrespectful attitude towards Moses and their questioning of God’s chosen leader. The phrase “the anger of the Lord was kindled against them” signifies God’s righteous anger, showing that their actions were not acceptable in His sight. This verse highlights the seriousness of their offense.

The latter part of the verse states, “and he departed.” This indicates that God’s presence withdrew from the tent of meeting. It symbolises the consequences of their actions and reflects the separation caused by their disobedience. God, in His holiness and justice, does not tolerate rebellion or disrespect, and here, His departure signifies His displeasure and the withdrawal of His favour.

This incident serves as a reminder to us about the importance of humility, respect, and obedience to God-ordained authority. Miriam and Aaron’s actions displayed a lack of trust in God’s choice of Moses as the leader of Israel. As a result, they faced the consequences of their behaviour.

Furthermore, this passage also reveals God’s unique relationship with Moses. In Numbers 12:6-8, God emphasises that He speaks with Moses face to face, indicating a deeper level of communication and intimacy. Miriam and Aaron’s discontent arose from their envy and desire for a similar status, which ultimately led to their punishment.

In summary, Numbers 12:9 reminds us of the seriousness of disrespect, rebellion, and envy in the eyes of God. It underscores the importance of humility, respect for authority, and trust in God’s appointed leaders. We can learn from this passage to guard our hearts against jealousy, honour God’s chosen instruments, and embrace humility in our relationships with both God and others.
