Numbers 13:31

Posted on 14 December 2023
Listen to this article

“But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.”

This verse is part of the account of the twelve spies that Moses sent to explore the land of Canaan, which God had promised to give to the Israelites as their inheritance. Moses selected one representative from each of the twelve tribes to spy out the land. After forty days, they returned to give their report.

In Numbers 13:31, ten of the twelve spies expressed their fear and doubt regarding the conquest of Canaan. They acknowledged that the people living there were strong and mighty, causing them to feel inadequate in comparison. Their negative report focused on the giants in the land and the fortified cities, leading them to conclude that the Israelites would not be able to overcome their enemies.

It’s important to note that the report of the spies was divided, as two of them, Joshua and Caleb, expressed faith in God’s promise and encouraged the people to trust in the Lord. Their perspective differed from the majority, as they believed that with God’s help, they would be victorious in taking possession of the land.

This verse presents a crucial lesson about faith and trust in God’s promises. The ten spies who doubted God’s ability to give them victory allowed fear and their limited understanding to cloud their judgment. They focused on the obstacles and challenges rather than on the faithfulness and power of God.

On the other hand, Joshua and Caleb demonstrated unwavering faith and trust in God. They saw the same challenges and obstacles, but their perspective was shaped by their belief that God was with them and would fulfill His promise. They understood that the strength of their enemies was irrelevant when compared to the strength of their God.

This passage serves as a reminder to us today that when we face challenges or uncertainties, it is essential to anchor our faith in God’s promises. Just like the Israelites, we may encounter obstacles that seem insurmountable, but we can find courage and hope by trusting in God’s faithfulness and power.

Furthermore, Numbers 13:31 also highlights the significance of our perspective. Our outlook on situations greatly impacts our response and actions. Focusing on our limitations and the difficulties before us can lead to doubt and fear. However, shifting our focus to the greatness and faithfulness of God enables us to face challenges with confidence and determination.

In conclusion, Numbers 13:31 teaches us about the importance of faith and trust in God’s promises, even when faced with daunting obstacles. It reminds us to fix our eyes on God’s faithfulness and power rather than on our limitations. By doing so, we can overcome fear and doubt, and move forward with confidence, knowing that God is with us and will fulfill His promises.
