Numbers 13:33

Posted on 14 December 2023
Listen to this article

“And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.”

Context:Numbers 13 recounts the account of Moses sending twelve spies, one from each tribe of Israel, to explore the land of Canaan before the Israelites entered it. The spies were instructed to gather information about the land and its inhabitants. When they returned, they gave their report to Moses and the people of Israel.

The Giants and the Sons of Anak:In Numbers 13:33, the spies describe seeing giants in the land of Canaan, specifically the sons of Anak. The mention of giants creates a sense of fear and intimidation among the Israelites. The sons of Anak were known for their great height and strength, which made them formidable opponents in battle. This report contributed to the doubts and concerns expressed by the Israelites about entering the Promised Land.

Grasshoppers in Our Own Sight:The spies’ report includes their perception of themselves in comparison to the giants. They say, “we were in our own sight as grasshoppers.” This statement reveals their feelings of insignificance and inadequacy in the face of the challenges that lay ahead. They saw themselves as small and powerless, which affected their confidence and faith.

Grasshoppers in Their Sight:The spies also mention their perception of how the giants saw them. They say, “so we were in their sight.” Although this statement is based on their own assumptions, it reflects their belief that the giants viewed them as weak and easily conquerable. This fear of being perceived as insignificant further fueled their doubts and contributed to their negative report.

Faith and Trust in God:Numbers 13:33 highlights the importance of faith and trust in God’s promises. Despite the formidable challenges they faced, the Israelites were meant to trust in God’s guidance and protection. Unfortunately, the negative report from the spies caused the Israelites to lose sight of God’s power and promises. Their lack of faith led to grumbling and rebellion, resulting in a delay of their entry into the Promised Land.

Application:This passage reminds us of the significance of faith and trust in God, especially in the face of daunting challenges. Just like the spies, we may encounter situations that make us feel insignificant or powerless. However, we should remember that God is greater than any obstacle we face. Instead of focusing on our limitations, we should focus on God’s strength and His faithfulness to fulfill His promises. By placing our trust in Him, we can overcome our fears and move forward with confidence.

In conclusion, Numbers 13:33 provides valuable lessons about the importance of faith and trust in God’s promises, even when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges. It reminds us to rely on God’s strength and to view ourselves through His perspective rather than our own limited understanding.
