Numbers 14:15

Listen to this article

“Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak,”

Context:Numbers 14 records the account of the Israelites’ rebellion against God after receiving a negative report from the spies who explored the Promised Land. The people were filled with fear and doubted God’s ability to give them victory over the inhabitants of Canaan. In this verse, Moses intercedes on behalf of the people, praying for God’s mercy and making a plea for His reputation among the nations.

Intercessory Prayer:Moses, as a faithful leader and mediator, stands before God to intercede for the rebellious Israelites. He pleads with God not to destroy the entire nation but to show mercy. Moses understood that if God annihilated the people, it would give a negative testimony to the surrounding nations who had heard about God’s mighty deeds.

Concern for God’s Reputation:Moses was deeply concerned about the reputation of God among the nations. He knew that God’s fame had spread throughout the region due to the miraculous signs and wonders He performed during the Exodus from Egypt. If God destroyed the Israelites in the wilderness, the nations would question His ability to fulfil His promises and doubt His power.

Importance of God’s Name:Moses understood that God’s name and reputation were at stake. The nations surrounding Israel would question the credibility and power of the God who led His people out of Egypt if He failed to bring them into the Promised Land. Moses appealed to God’s character and reputation, acknowledging that the nations were watching and would form their opinions based on God’s actions.
