Numbers 14:19

Listen to this article

"Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now."

Context:The book of Numbers is part of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Old Testament. It records the events that took place during the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the edge of the Promised Land. In Numbers 14, the Israelites had reached the border of Canaan, but due to the negative report of the spies, they doubted God’s ability to conquer the land and rebelled against Him.

The Prayer for Pardon:In verse 19, Moses intercedes on behalf of the Israelites and pleads with God for their forgiveness. He acknowledges the people’s iniquity and asks for God’s pardon based on His great mercy. Moses recognizes that God has already forgiven the people numerous times, starting from their deliverance from Egypt and throughout their journey in the wilderness.

The Greatness of God’s Mercy:Moses appeals to the greatness of God’s mercy as the basis for forgiving the people. The Israelites had continuously tested God’s patience with their grumbling, disobedience, and lack of faith. Despite their rebelliousness, Moses acknowledges God’s abounding mercy and seeks forgiveness based on that attribute. This emphasizes the divine character of God, which includes His compassion and willingness to pardon those who repent.

God’s Forgiveness:Moses reminds God of His past acts of forgiveness towards the Israelites. Throughout their journey, God had demonstrated His willingness to pardon their transgressions and show them mercy. This serves as a reminder that God is compassionate and forgiving, even when His people fail Him.

Application:Numbers 14:19 highlights the importance of intercession and seeking forgiveness on behalf of others. Moses’ prayer exemplifies humility and compassion, as he intercedes for a nation that had rebelled against God. It also teaches us about God’s character, showing His abundant mercy and willingness to forgive. As believers, we can learn from this passage to approach God with humility, confess our sins, and seek His forgiveness, both for ourselves and for others.

Overall, Numbers 14:19 reminds us of the significance of God’s mercy and forgiveness, and the power of intercession in seeking His pardon.
