Numbers 15:31

Listen to this article

“Because he hath despised the word of the LORD, and hath broken his commandment, that soul shall utterly be cut off; his iniquity shall be upon him.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and primarily deals with the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In Numbers 15, God gives instructions regarding offerings and sacrifices, emphasising the importance of obedience to His commandments.

Disobedience and Despising God’s Word:In Numbers 15:31, the phrase “he hath despised the word of the LORD” refers to someone who deliberately and willfully disobeys God’s commands. It implies a deliberate rejection of God’s authority and a lack of reverence for His word.

Breaking God’s Commandment:The verse also states that the person has “broken his commandment.” This emphasises the seriousness of the offense. God’s commandments are meant to guide His people in righteous living and to establish a covenant relationship with them. Breaking His commandments is a direct violation of this relationship.

Consequences of Disobedience:The verse declares that “that soul shall utterly be cut off.” This refers to severe punishment or exclusion from the community of God’s people. It implies that such a person will be held accountable for their actions and separated from the blessings and privileges associated with being part of God’s chosen people.

Personal Responsibility:The phrase “his iniquity shall be upon him” highlights personal responsibility for one’s actions. Each individual is accountable for their choices and the consequences that follow. God holds individuals responsible for their disobedience and its impact on their relationship with Him.

Application to Believers:While Numbers 15:31 was originally addressed to the Israelites under the Old Covenant, there are spiritual lessons that can be applied to believers today. As followers of God, we are called to obey His commandments and honour His word. Disobedience and a disregard for God’s instructions can lead to negative consequences and hinder our relationship with Him.

Grace and Forgiveness:It’s important to note that despite the severity of the consequences mentioned in Numbers 15:31, God is also a God of grace and forgiveness. Throughout the Bible, we see His willingness to forgive those who repent and turn back to Him. Even when we fall short, we can find forgiveness and restoration through Jesus Christ.

In summary, Numbers 15:31 serves as a reminder of the seriousness of disobedience and the consequences it brings. It emphasises the importance of respecting and obeying God’s commandments. However, it is crucial to balance this understanding with the knowledge of God’s grace and forgiveness, which are available to those who genuinely repent and seek His mercy.
