Numbers 15:36

Posted on 21 December 2023
Listen to this article

“And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died; as the Lord commanded Moses.”

Context:To understand the significance of Numbers 15:36, it’s important to consider the context of the verse. The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and records the events that took place during the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. In this particular chapter, the Lord gives various laws and instructions to Moses, including regulations regarding offerings, sacrifices, and the importance of keeping His commandments.

The incident:Prior to verse 36, there is an account of a man who violated the Sabbath commandment. The man was found gathering sticks on the Sabbath day, which was considered a violation of the law. This act was in direct disobedience to God’s command to keep the Sabbath holy (Exodus 20:8-11). The people brought the man to Moses, seeking guidance on how to handle the situation.

The punishment:In response to the man’s violation, the Lord commanded Moses that the man should be stoned to death. This punishment may seem severe to us today, but it was a reflection of the seriousness of violating God’s commands during that time. Stoning was a prescribed punishment for certain offenses in the Mosaic Law. It served as a visible deterrent to discourage others from disobeying God’s instructions and helped maintain the sanctity of the community.

The significance:The incident and subsequent punishment in Numbers 15:36 underscored the importance of obedience to God’s commandments. The Sabbath was a special day set apart by God as a sign of His covenant with the Israelites (Exodus 31:16-17). Violating the Sabbath was considered a serious offense because it disregarded the covenant relationship and rebelled against God’s authority.

Application:While the specific context and punishment of Numbers 15:36 may not directly apply to us today, the principle of obedience to God’s commands remains relevant. It reminds us of the importance of respecting and honoring God’s instructions. As Christians, we are called to live a life of obedience to God’s Word, following the teachings of Jesus Christ and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Disobedience to God’s commands not only brings consequences in our relationship with Him but can also negatively affect our relationship with others and the overall well-being of our community.

In summary, Numbers 15:36 highlights the seriousness of violating God’s commandments, specifically in the context of the Sabbath. While the punishment may appear severe, it serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience to God’s instructions and the need to honor the covenant relationship with Him. As we study this passage, we should reflect on our own commitment to obedience and seek to align our lives with God’s Word.
