Numbers 17:6

Listen to this article

“And Moses spake unto the children of Israel, and every one of their princes gave him a rod apiece, for each prince one, according to their fathers’ houses, even twelve rods: and the rod of Aaron was among their rods.”

Context:The book of Numbers describes the events that took place during the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In this particular passage, the Israelites were facing a rebellion led by Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, who challenged the leadership of Moses and Aaron. God instructed Moses to gather rods representing each tribe and place them in the Tabernicle.

The significance of the rods:The rods represented the authority and leadership of each tribe. Each tribe’s rod was marked with the name of the respective tribe’s leader. By collecting these rods, God intended to settle the dispute and establish His chosen leader.

The selection of Aaron’s rod:God commanded that each tribe bring their rod, including Aaron’s rod representing the tribe of Levi. The Levites had been chosen by God to serve as the priests and attendants of the Tabernacle. Aaron, as the high priest, had already been divinely appointed to this role. Therefore, his rod represented God’s choice for the priesthood.

The miraculous sign:God performed a miraculous sign to confirm His choice. The following day, when Moses entered the Tabernacle, he found that Aaron’s rod had budded, blossomed, and produced ripe almonds. This extraordinary event demonstrated that God had selected Aaron and the tribe of Levi to serve Him in the priestly duties.

The outcome:Moses presented the rods to the people, and each leader retrieved their respective rod. When they saw that Aaron’s rod had blossomed, they acknowledged God’s choice and stopped their rebellion against Moses and Aaron.
