Numbers 19:2

Listen to this article

"This is the ordinance of the law which the Lord hath commanded, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring thee a red heifer without spot, wherein is no blemish, and upon which never came yoke."

Numbers 19:2 is part of a chapter that describes the regulations for the ritual of the red heifer, also known as the "Ashes of the Red Heifer." This ceremony was significant for the purification of individuals who had come into contact with a dead body, which rendered them ceremonially unclean according to the Mosaic Law.

In this verse, God gives Moses specific instructions regarding the red heifer that was to be used in the purification process. Here are the key points we can draw from this verse:

  • "This is the ordinance of the law": God declares that what follows is a specific commandment or regulation, a prescribed law that the Israelites were to follow.
  • "Speak unto the children of Israel": Moses is instructed to communicate this commandment to the entire community of Israel.
  • "That they bring thee a red heifer without spot, wherein is no blemish": The Israelites were required to find and bring a red heifer-a female cow that is reddish-brown in colour. The heifer was to be without any physical defect, spot, or blemish.
  • "Upon which never came yoke": The red heifer should be one that has never been used for any labour or work, symbolising its purity and separation for this sacred purpose.

The ritual of the red heifer involved a complex process described in the subsequent verses of Numbers 19. The heifer was slaughtered outside the camp, and its blood was sprinkled by the priest toward the Tabernacle seven times. Then the entire heifer, including its hide, flesh, blood, and dung, was burned to ashes. These ashes were then collected and used to make a water solution for purification purposes. This water was employed to cleanse individuals who had come into contact with a dead body, which would restore their ceremonial purity.

The ritual of the red heifer has significant symbolic and spiritual meaning. The red heifer represents purity and the removal of defilement caused by contact with death. It serves as a reminder of the consequences of sin and the need for purification before coming into the presence of God. In Christian theology, the red heifer is often seen as a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ, who, through His sacrificial death on the cross, provided the ultimate purification from sin for believers.

Overall, Numbers 19:2 emphasises the importance of following God’s commandments and instructions in matters of ritual purification, highlighting the meticulous attention to detail required in the worship of God under the Mosaic Law.
