Numbers 19:22

Posted on 25 December 2023
Listen to this article

“And whatsoever the unclean person toucheth shall be unclean; and the soul that toucheth it shall be unclean until even.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and contains the historical account of the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. Numbers 19 describes the laws regarding purification from ceremonial uncleanness caused by contact with a dead body or a grave.

The Unclean Person:In this verse, the “unclean person” refers to an individual who has become ritually impure by coming into contact with a dead body or participating in burial rituals. In the context of the Israelites, such contact would render a person ceremonially unclean and unfit for participation in certain religious activities until they underwent the purification process.

The Effect of Uncleanness:According to the verse, anything that the unclean person touches becomes unclean as well. This principle highlights the contagious nature of ceremonial uncleanness and emphasizes the need for separation from anything that could transmit impurity. The mention of “soul” in this verse suggests that the impurity affects not only the physical state but also the spiritual condition of the individual.

Duration of Uncleanness:The verse states that the soul that touches something unclean remains unclean until evening. This indicates that the period of uncleanness is temporary and will be resolved by the end of the day. However, during this time, the person would be restricted from participating in religious activities and communal worship.

Symbolism and Spiritual Application:This purification ritual described in Numbers 19 has symbolic significance and can be applied spiritually. In the New Testament, the concept of ceremonial uncleanness is used metaphorically to describe sin and its defiling effect on the soul. Just as contact with an unclean person made one ceremonially unclean in the Old Testament, contact with sin can contaminate and defile the soul. This highlights the need for spiritual purification through repentance and forgiveness, which are provided through Jesus Christ.

Jesus’ Fulfillment:The ritual of purification from uncleanness found its ultimate fulfilment in Jesus Christ. Through His sacrificial death and resurrection, Jesus provided a way for people to be cleansed from sin and made spiritually whole. In Him, believers find forgiveness, restoration, and the ability to draw near to God without the need for continual purification rituals.

In conclusion, Numbers 19:22 emphasises the contagious nature of ceremonial uncleanness and its temporary effect on the individual. Symbolically, it points to the need for spiritual purification from sin and highlights Jesus Christ as the ultimate fulfilment of this need.
