Numbers 2:17

Posted on 8 October 2023
Listen to this article

“Then the tabernacle of the congregation shall set forward with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camp: as they encamp, so shall they set forward, every man in his place by their standards.”

This verse is part of a larger section in the book of Numbers that describes the arrangement and organisation of the Israelite camp in the wilderness. The Lord commanded Moses to take a census of the Israelites and arrange them in their respective tribal camps around the tabernacle. Each tribe had its own position and standard or banner.

The Tabernacle of the Congregation:The tabernacle was the portable dwelling place of God’s presence among the Israelites. It was the central focus of their worship and served as a symbolic representation of God dwelling in their midst. In this verse, it is mentioned that the tabernacle would set forward with the camp of the Levites. This implies that the Levites, who were responsible for the tabernacle’s care and transportation, would lead the way as the camp moved.

The Camp of the Levites:The Levites were chosen by God to serve Him in various capacities within the tabernacle. They were not given a specific inheritance of land but were dedicated to the service of the Lord. In the Israelite camp, the Levites were positioned in the midst of the camp, surrounding the tabernacle. They were responsible for the dismantling, transportation, and reassembly of the tabernacle whenever the camp needed to move. Their central location highlighted their importance and their unique role in the worship and service of God.

Every Man in His Place by Their Standards:Each tribe of Israel had its own designated position around the tabernacle. The standards or banners mentioned in the verse represented the tribal identity and symbolised the unity of each tribe. The tribes were to encamp and set forward according to the Lord’s command, maintaining order and structure in the camp. This organisation provided a visual representation of God’s divine order and emphasised the importance of unity and cooperation among the Israelites.

Lessons from Numbers 2:17:

  • Divine Order:The arrangement of the camp and the positioning of the tribes reflected God’s desire for order and structure among His people. It teaches us the importance of organisation and following God’s instructions in our lives. God is a God of order, and when we align ourselves with His plans and purposes, we experience His blessings and guidance.
  • The Role of Service:The placement of the Levites in the centre of the camp highlights the significance of their service to God. It reminds us that every member of the community has a role to play in the worship and service of God. Each person’s contribution, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, is essential for the functioning of the body of Christ.
  • Unity and Cooperation:The setting forward of the camp in a coordinated manner emphasised the need for unity and cooperation among the Israelites. It serves as a reminder that as believers, we are called to work together in harmony, supporting and encouraging one another. By doing so, we can accomplish more for the Kingdom of God.

Overall, Numbers 2:17 teaches us about the importance of order, service, and unity in our relationship with God and with one another. It encourages us to seek His guidance, fulfil our roles with diligence, and work together for His purposes.
