Numbers 2:21

Posted on 8 October 2023
Listen to this article

“Then the tribe of Benjamin: and the captain of the sons of Benjamin shall be Abidan the son of Gideoni.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book in the Old Testament and records the events that occurred during the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the edge of the Promised Land. This verse is part of a larger passage that describes the arrangement of the twelve tribes of Israel around the tabernacle.

The Tribe of Benjamin:Benjamin was one of the twelve sons of Jacob (Israel) and the younger brother of Joseph. The tribe of Benjamin was named after him. In this verse, it is mentioned that the tribe of Benjamin had a designated captain named Abidan, who was the son of Gideoni.

Leadership:The mention of a captain or leader for each tribe emphasizes the organisation and order within the camp of Israel. These captains were responsible for overseeing their respective tribes and coordinating their movements during the journey.

Abidan:Abidan, the son of Gideoni, was appointed as the captain of the sons of Benjamin. Although not much is known about Abidan from the biblical text, his role as a leader indicates his responsibility and prominence within the tribe.

Significance:The detailed organisation of the tribes around the tabernacle demonstrates God’s desire for order and structure among His people. This arrangement served practical purposes such as facilitating the movement of the Israelites in the wilderness and providing a clear system of leadership and responsibility.

Application:While the specific arrangement of tribes may not directly apply to us today, the principles of order, leadership, and organisation can still be relevant. In our own lives and communities, it is important to have structure, responsible leadership, and a willingness to work together toward a common goal.

Unity in Diversity:The mention of the different tribes of Israel and their appointed leaders reminds us of the diverse nature of God’s people. Each tribe had its unique characteristics, strengths, and contributions. Similarly, in the body of Christ today, there is a beautiful diversity of individuals, each with their unique gifts and callings, working together for the advancement of God’s kingdom.

In conclusion, Numbers 2:21 highlights the tribe of Benjamin and its appointed leader, Abidan. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of organisation, leadership, and unity within the community of God’s people. It also encourages us to embrace the diversity of gifts and callings among believers while working together for a common purpose.
