Numbers 2:28

Posted on 8 October 2023
Listen to this article

“And his host, and those that were numbered thereof, were forty and one thousand and five hundred.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and provides a historical account of the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In this particular verse, the focus is on the organisation of the tribes of Israel for their encampment in the wilderness.

Explanation:

  • Organisation of the Israelite Camp:In Numbers chapter 2, God commanded Moses and Aaron to organise the Israelites into specific tribal encampments around the Tabernacle, the portable sanctuary that symbolised God’s presence among His people. Each tribe was assigned a specific location and had its own leader.
  • The Tribe of Dan:Numbers 2:25-31 specifically mentions the tribe of Dan. Dan was one of the twelve tribes of Israel, descended from Jacob’s son, Dan. The tribe of Dan was allotted a position on the north side of the Tabernacle and was led by Ahiezer, the son of Ammishaddai.
  • The Numbering of the Tribe of Dan:The verse states that the host, or fighting force, of the tribe of Dan, numbered forty-one thousand five hundred. This number represents the total number of men of fighting age (20 years old and above) within the tribe of Dan who were fit for military service.
  • Symbolism and Significance:The precise numbering of each tribe demonstrates God’s attention to detail and order. It highlights His concern for the organisation and structure of His people as they journeyed through the wilderness. Each tribe had its specific role and place within the community, emphasising the importance of unity and cooperation.

Lessons for Christians:While the organisation and numbering of the tribes may seem distant from our modern context, there are several spiritual lessons we can draw from this passage. These include:

  • Order and structure:God is a God of order and not chaos. He values organisation and discipline within His people. As Christians, we should seek to maintain order in our personal lives and in the church.
  • Unity and cooperation:Just as each tribe had a specific place and function, each member of the body of Christ has a unique role and purpose. We should recognise and appreciate the diversity of gifts and talents within the church and work together in harmony.
  • Attention to detail:God pays attention to the smallest details, and nothing escapes His notice. We should strive for excellence in our actions and pay attention to the details of our Christian walk.

Overall, Numbers 2:28 teaches us about the importance of organisation, unity, and attention to detail within God’s community. It reminds us that God values order and purpose in our lives as we seek to fulfil our roles as His people.
