Numbers 20:9

Listen to this article

“And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him.”

This verse is part of a larger narrative found in Numbers 20:1-13. To understand the significance of Numbers 20:9, let’s explore the context:and the events that led up to it.

In the wilderness, the Israelites had been wandering for many years after their liberation from Egypt. During this time, they faced various challenges and witnessed numerous miracles performed by God through Moses. In Numbers 20, we find the Israelites once again facing a water shortage, and they begin to complain to Moses and Aaron, expressing their thirst and dissatisfaction.

Response:In response to the people’s complaints, Moses and Aaron sought the guidance of the Lord. God instructed Moses to take his rod, gather the assembly of Israel, and speak to the rock before their eyes, and it would yield water for them and their livestock (Numbers 20:8).

However, when Moses gathered the people together, he became frustrated with their continued complaining and rebuked them, saying, “Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?” (Numbers 20:10, KJV). Moses then struck the rock twice with his rod instead of speaking to it, as God had commanded.

As a result, water did come out of the rock, and the people and their livestock were provided for. Nevertheless, God was displeased with Moses and Aaron’s actions because they did not honor His command precisely. Their failure to follow God’s explicit instructions resulted in consequences for both of them.

Consequences:In Numbers 20:12, God declared His judgment upon Moses and Aaron, saying, “Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.”

This event serves as a pivotal moment in Moses’ life, as it marked the reason why he was not allowed to enter the Promised Land with the rest of the Israelites. It is a sobering reminder of the importance of obeying God’s commands faithfully and completely.

From this passage, we can learn several lessons. First, it emphasizes the significance of obeying God’s instructions precisely. Even minor deviations from God’s commands can have serious consequences. Second, it reminds us of the importance of honoring God’s name and sanctifying Him in the eyes of others. Moses’ failure to do so in this instance had a significant impact on the people’s perception of God.

Lastly, this passage serves as a reminder that leaders, even great ones like Moses, are not exempt from the consequences of their actions. Moses’ punishment demonstrates that accountability applies to everyone, regardless of their position or accomplishments.
