Numbers 22:19

Posted on 29 December 2023
Listen to this article

“Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the Lord will say unto me more.”

Context:The book of Numbers recounts the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness after their exodus from Egypt. In this particular passage, the Israelites are encamped in the plains of Moab, and Balak, the king of Moab, is concerned about the growing number and strength of the Israelites. Balak sends messengers to Balaam, a diviner, asking him to curse the Israelites.

Balaam’s encounter:When the messengers reach Balaam, he asks them to spend the night so that he can inquire of the Lord regarding their request. Balaam wants to make sure that whatever he does or says aligns with God’s will. He recognises the importance of seeking guidance from the Lord in such matters.

Seeking God’s counsel:Balaam’s response reveals his desire to know what the Lord will say to him. He understands the significance of relying on God’s wisdom and guidance rather than acting on his own accord. This highlights the importance of seeking God’s will in all aspects of our lives, especially when faced with difficult decisions.

Trusting in God’s guidance:Balaam’s intention to know what the Lord will say indicates his trust in God’s direction. He doesn’t want to rely on his own understanding or personal agenda but desires to align himself with God’s purposes. This demonstrates the need for believers to trust in the Lord and seek His guidance, even when faced with challenging situations.

Application:As believers, we can learn from Balaam’s example. When confronted with decisions or challenges, it is crucial to seek God’s counsel through prayer, studying His Word, and seeking wise counsel from fellow believers. Trusting in God’s guidance and aligning ourselves with His will ensures that we make choices that honour Him and lead to His intended outcomes.

In summary, Numbers 22:19 portrays Balaam’s recognition of the importance of seeking the Lord’s guidance and desiring to know His will. It reminds us to seek God’s counsel in our own lives, trust in His guidance, and align our choices with His purposes.
