Numbers 22:20

Listen to this article

“And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him, If the men come to call thee, rise up, and go with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do.”

Context:Numbers 22 records the story of Balaam, a prophet who was approached by Balak, the king of Moab, to curse the people of Israel. Balak was concerned about the growing number and strength of the Israelites and wanted to weaken them by enlisting Balaam’s help. In this verse, God visits Balaam and instructs him about what he should do.

God’s Communication:It is important to note that God initiates the interaction with Balaam. Despite Balak’s request, God has a different plan. He speaks to Balaam during the night, indicating that it was a divine encounter. This demonstrates God’s active involvement in the affairs of His people.

Obedience to God:God tells Balaam that if the men come to call him, he can go with them. However, Balaam is given a condition: he must only speak the words that God would give him. This highlights the importance of obedience to God’s instructions. Balaam is allowed to accompany the men, but he must not deviate from God’s will.

God’s Sovereignty:Although God allows Balaam to go, it is clear that God is ultimately in control. God’s intention is to use Balaam to bless the people of Israel, not to curse them. Later in the story, Balaam’s donkey is divinely enabled to speak, and Balaam himself declares the words of blessing upon Israel instead of cursing.

Application:This verse teaches us several valuable lessons. First, it reminds us of the importance of seeking God’s guidance and waiting for His instructions in our lives. God’s direction is crucial, even when it may seem contrary to our expectations or desires. Second, obedience to God’s commands is essential. Balaam’s partial obedience leads to complications and struggles, highlighting the importance of wholeheartedly following God’s will. Finally, the verse emphasizes God’s sovereignty and control over all situations. We should trust in God’s plans and purposes, knowing that He works everything for the good of those who love Him.
