Numbers 22:26

Posted on 29 December 2023
Listen to this article

“And the angel of the LORD went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.”

This verse is part of the story of Balaam and his encounter with the angel of the Lord. To understand the significance of this particular verse, it is essential to provide some context.

In Numbers 22, the Israelites were journeying through the wilderness, and they had come near the land of Moab. Balak, the king of Moab, became fearful of the Israelites because of their vast numbers and their victories over neighbouring nations. Balak sought to hire Balaam, a renowned diviner, to curse the Israelites and thwart their progress.

Initially, Balaam was hesitant to comply with Balak’s request. However, after being persuaded by the Moabite messengers, Balaam sought the Lord’s counsel. God allowed Balaam to go with Balak’s men, but God’s instruction was clear: Balaam was to speak only what God told him.

As Balaam set out on his journey, riding his donkey, God sent His angel to stand in the road as a divine obstacle. However, Balaam was unaware of the angel’s presence, while the donkey saw the angel and veered off the path. Balaam became frustrated with the donkey and struck it. This happened three times before the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth, and it rebuked Balaam for his actions.

In Numbers 22:26, we find the angel of the Lord advancing further into a narrow place where there was no way to turn either to the right or the left. This verse highlights the angel’s purposeful movement, strategically positioning itself in a narrow passage. The narrow place represents an inescapable situation that Balaam and his donkey found themselves in. It emphasizes the angel’s intent to block Balaam’s path and halt his progress.

This verse serves as a reminder of God’s sovereign power and control over our lives. Despite Balaam’s initial disobedience and desire to go with Balak’s men, God intervened to prevent him from speaking anything contrary to His will. The angel’s presence in the narrow place symbolizes divine intervention, obstructing Balaam’s course of action.

The broader narrative of Balaam and the angel underscores the importance of obedience to God’s instructions. Balaam’s encounter serves as a warning against pursuing personal gain at the expense of God’s will. It demonstrates that even when we deviate from the path God has set for us, He has the power to redirect us and bring us back in line with His purposes.

In summary, Numbers 22:26 portrays the angel of the Lord positioning itself in a narrow passage, signifying divine intervention and an inescapable situation for Balaam. This verse emphasizes God’s authority and sovereignty over our lives and serves as a lesson on the importance of obedience to His will.
