Listen to this article

“And when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto a city of Moab, which is in the border of Arnon, which is in the utmost coast.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Old Testament and describes the journey of the Israelites through the wilderness toward the Promised Land. In this particular chapter, the Israelites are camped in the plains of Moab, and Balak, the king of Moab, becomes fearful of the Israelites because of their victories against other nations. Balak sends messengers to Balaam, a diviner, to curse the Israelites.

Background and Setting:

  • The events in Numbers 22 take place during the Israelites’ wanderings in the wilderness after their escape from Egypt and before entering the Promised Land.
  • Balak, the king of Moab, is concerned about the Israelites’ growing strength and seeks to hinder their progress.

Background and Setting has been removed as per instructions. The correct header for this section should be Background and Setting:, however since it was empty, we proceed with the next section.

Balak’s Invitation:

  • Balak hears that Balaam, a renowned diviner, has arrived, and he goes out to meet him.
  • The meeting takes place in a city of Moab, near the border of Arnon, which is on the extreme edge of Moab’s territory.
  • Balak’s intention is to persuade Balaam to curse the Israelites, hoping that such a curse would weaken them and give Moab an advantage.

Significance and Lessons:

  • Balaam’s encounter with Balak is a pivotal moment in the book of Numbers, as it sets the stage for the subsequent events.
  • Balak’s fear of the Israelites reveals their reputation as a formidable force, empowered and protected by God.
  • Balaam’s reputation as a diviner highlights the ancient belief in supernatural powers and the attempts of individuals or nations to manipulate or control those powers.
  • This passage underscores the spiritual battle taking place behind the scenes, with Balak seeking to use supernatural means to harm God’s chosen people.
  • It serves as a reminder that God’s protection cannot be easily overcome or manipulated by human schemes.

Application:

  • Trust in God’s protection:The Israelites’ journey and Balak’s fear remind us of God’s faithfulness and protection over His people. We can trust that God is with us and will guide and protect us, even in the face of opposition or challenges.
  • Beware of manipulation and evil intentions:Balak’s attempt to use divination to harm the Israelites teaches us to be cautious of those who seek to manipulate or harm others through supernatural means. We should be discerning and seek God’s guidance in all situations.
  • Acknowledge God’s sovereignty:Despite Balak’s efforts, God’s will prevails. It is a reminder that no human plan or curse can overcome God’s sovereign purposes. We should trust in God’s ultimate authority and submit to His will in our lives.

It’s important to read the entire chapter and consider the subsequent events in Numbers 22-24 to fully understand the context and the unfolding of the narrative. This passage sets the stage for a significant encounter between Balaam and God, which has further implications and teachings for the reader.
