"And Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to say any thing? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak."
Context:Numbers 22 recounts the story of Balak, the king of Moab, who was fearful of the Israelites and sought to curse them. He sent messengers to summon Balaam, a prophet, to curse the Israelites. However, God intervened and instructed Balaam not to curse them but to bless them instead. Balaam obeys God’s command and speaks only what God puts in his mouth.
Balaam’s reliance on God’s word:Balaam demonstrates a significant understanding of his role as a prophet. Despite Balak’s attempts to manipulate him, Balaam recognizes that he has no power of his own to speak anything other than what God puts in his mouth. This highlights the importance of being aligned with God’s will and relying on His word for guidance.
Obedience to God:Balaam’s obedience to God’s instruction to bless the Israelites instead of cursing them teaches us the importance of obedience to God’s will. Balaam could have been swayed by Balak’s offer of riches and honour, but he remained faithful to God’s command. This reminds us that our allegiance should be to God and His purposes rather than the temptations or desires of the world.
God’s sovereignty:Balaam’s statement acknowledges God’s authority and sovereignty. He recognizes that it is God who determines the words he speaks. This verse reminds us that God is in control and has ultimate authority over our lives. It is our responsibility to align ourselves with His will and submit to His guidance.
Application:As believers, we should seek to align ourselves with God’s will and rely on His word for guidance. Like Balaam, we must recognise our dependence on God’s wisdom and direction. We should prioritise obedience to God’s commands, even when faced with temptations or pressures from the world. Ultimately, our trust should be in God’s sovereignty and His plans for our lives.
