Numbers 23:12

Listen to this article

“And he answered and said, Must I not take heed to speak that which the LORD hath put in my mouth?”

Numbers 23:12 is a part of the narrative about the prophet Balaam and the king of Moab, Balak. Balak had hired Balaam to curse the people of Israel because he saw them as a threat to his kingdom. However, each time Balaam went to curse Israel, God intervened and turned his curses into blessings.

In this verse, Balaam responds to Balak’s frustration over the fact that instead of cursing Israel, Balaam has blessed them three times. Balaam acknowledges that he can only speak the words that the Lord puts in his mouth. This verse highlights an important aspect of Balaam’s prophetic ministry, which was the necessity of speaking only what God had revealed to him.

Here are a few key points we can gather from Numbers 23:12:

  • Divine Revelation:Balaam recognizes that he must pay careful attention to speak only what the Lord has given him to say. This implies that Balaam understood the importance of receiving divine revelation and speaking in accordance with it. As a prophet, he understood that his words had to align with God’s will.
  • Obedience to God’s Word:Balaam’s response indicates his submission to God’s instructions. He acknowledges that it is his responsibility to speak only the words that the Lord has given him. Balaam demonstrates a level of obedience by refusing to speak contrary to what God had revealed to him.
  • Trust in God’s Guidance:Balaam’s statement reveals his reliance on God’s guidance. He understands that the words he speaks are not his own, but rather a product of divine inspiration. By acknowledging this, Balaam expresses his faith in God’s ability to guide and direct his words.

This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of speaking in accordance with God’s will. It emphasizes the need for prophets, and indeed all believers, to seek divine revelation and align their words with the truth revealed by God. Balaam’s example encourages us to be cautious in our speech and to rely on God’s guidance and wisdom.

Overall, Numbers 23:12 teaches us about the importance of obedience, trust, and aligning our words with God’s will. It encourages us to seek divine revelation and speak in accordance with God’s truth.
