Numbers 23:28

Listen to this article

“Balak brought Balaam unto the top of Peor, that looketh toward Jeshimon.”

Context:The book of Numbers recounts the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness after their deliverance from slavery in Egypt. In this particular verse, we find the story of Balak, the king of Moab, who sought to curse the Israelites through the prophet Balaam. Balak hoped that the curse would weaken the Israelites and prevent them from advancing into Moab’s territory.

Balak’s Plan:Balak takes Balaam to the top of Peor, a mountain overlooking the plain of Jeshimon. From this vantage point, Balak intended for Balaam to pronounce a curse on the Israelites. Balak hoped that Balaam’s words would bring harm upon the Israelites and thwart their progress.

Balaam’s Prophecies:Despite Balak’s insistence, God did not allow Balaam to curse the Israelites. Instead, whenever Balaam opened his mouth to speak, blessings for the Israelites flowed forth. Balaam’s prophecies were contrary to Balak’s desires and spoke of the favour and protection that God had bestowed upon His people.

Symbolic Significance:

  • God’s Protection: The fact that Balak brought Balaam to the top of Peor, overlooking Jeshimon, indicates the Lord’s protective presence over His people. The Israelites were encamped in the plain below, but God’s hand shielded them from the intended curses.
  • Foiled Plans: Balak’s plan to curse the Israelites was thwarted, illustrating that no weapon formed against God’s chosen people will prosper (Isaiah 54:17). God’s sovereignty and faithfulness to His promises were demonstrated through Balaam’s prophetic blessings.

Lessons for Believers:

  • Trust in God’s Protection: Just as God guarded and blessed the Israelites, believers can trust in His protection. Even when others may plot harm or curses against us, God is our shield and refuge (Psalm 91:4).
  • God’s Sovereignty: The story of Balaam and Balak reminds us that God’s plans prevail over human intentions. No matter the schemes of others, God remains in control, and His purposes will be accomplished (Proverbs 19:21).
  • Blessings Amidst Opposition: The account of Balaam’s blessings teaches us that God can turn our adversaries’ intentions for evil into blessings. In challenging situations, God’s grace and favour can shine forth, bringing about unexpected outcomes (Romans 8:28).

In summary, Numbers 23:28 highlights Balak’s failed attempts to curse the Israelites and the overarching theme of God’s faithfulness to His people. It encourages believers to trust in God’s protection, recognise His sovereignty, and remain hopeful for blessings even in the face of opposition.
