Numbers 23:29

Listen to this article

“Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel: according to the Lord, the God of the whole earth, it shall be done.”

Context:The book of Numbers recounts the journey of the Israelites in the wilderness after their deliverance from Egypt. Balak, the king of Moab, was alarmed by the Israelites’ growing numbers and sought to curse them in order to weaken them. Balak called upon the prophet Balaam to curse the Israelites, hoping to defeat them in battle. However, instead of cursing Israel, Balaam blessed them multiple times at God’s command.

Obedience to God:Balaam’s obedience to God is evident in his response to Balak’s request. Instead of succumbing to the temptation of wealth or pleasing the Moabite king, Balaam remained steadfast in doing what God had commanded him. This teaches us the importance of obeying God’s will rather than human desires or expectations.

God’s Sovereignty:Balaam’s instructions to build seven altars and offer sacrifices reflect his understanding of God’s sovereignty. The number seven is often associated with completeness and perfection in the Bible. By offering seven sacrifices, Balaam acknowledges God’s supreme authority and the need to approach Him with reverence and humility.

God’s Blessings:Despite Balak’s intent to curse the Israelites, God compelled Balaam to bless them instead. This demonstrates God’s faithfulness to His promises and His protection over His chosen people. It also shows that no human effort or plan can prevail against God’s purpose for His people.

God’s Unchanging Nature:Balaam’s obedience and unwavering commitment to God’s instructions highlight the unchanging nature of God. Just as God remained true to His word and prevented Balaam from cursing Israel, God’s character and faithfulness remain constant throughout time. This provides us with assurance that God’s promises are trustworthy and His plans will come to pass.
