Numbers 24:10

Listen to this article

“And Balak’s anger was kindled against Balaam, and he smote his hands together: and Balak said unto Balaam, I called thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast altogether blessed them these three times.”

Context:The book of Numbers recounts the events that took place during the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. In this particular chapter, Balak, the king of Moab, sought to curse the Israelites because he feared their growing strength and victory over neighbouring territories. Balak summoned Balaam, a renowned diviner, to pronounce a curse upon the Israelites. However, instead of cursing them, Balaam pronounced blessings upon them three times, frustrating Balak.

The Sovereignty of God:One of the significant aspects of this passage is the demonstration of God’s sovereignty. Despite Balak’s intentions to harm the Israelites, God had a different plan. Balaam, although initially tempted by the prospect of wealth and rewards from Balak, was ultimately guided by God to bless the people of Israel. This event highlights that God is in control of all circumstances and can overrule the plans of individuals or nations. It teaches us to trust in God’s sovereignty and have faith that His purposes will prevail.

The Power of Blessings:The repeated blessings pronounced by Balaam upon the Israelites reveal the power of God’s favour and blessings. Instead of a curse, Balaam spoke words of blessing and favour, acknowledging the special relationship between God and the Israelites. This emphasises the significance of blessings in the lives of believers. Blessings can bring about divine favour, protection, and prosperity. It reminds us that God’s blessings are not limited by human expectations or circumstances but are based on His grace and sovereignty.

God’s Protection:Despite Balak’s anger and frustration, he could not overcome God’s protection over His people. Balak had sought to curse the Israelites out of fear and jealousy, but God turned the situation around and transformed the intended curse into a blessing. This event serves as a reminder that when we belong to God, He surrounds us with His protection. No weapon formed against us shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17). It reinforces the truth that God can thwart the plans of our enemies and turn their curses into blessings.

Application:

  • Trusting in God’s Sovereignty:This passage encourages us to trust in God’s sovereignty, even in challenging circumstances. We should have faith that He can turn situations around for our good and His glory.
  • Speaking Blessings:As believers, we have the ability to bless others with our words. Instead of cursing or speaking negatively about others, we should strive to bless them and declare God’s favour over their lives.
  • Relying on God’s Protection:Just as God protected the Israelites, we can rely on His divine protection in our lives. We should not fear the schemes of our enemies but trust in God’s ability to defend and deliver us.

In conclusion, Numbers 24:10 showcases God’s sovereignty, the power of blessings, and His unwavering protection over His people. It teaches us to trust in God, speak blessings, and rely on His divine protection in our lives.
