Listen to this article

“And he took up his parable, and said, Alas, who shall live when God doeth this!”

Context:The book of Numbers records the journey of the Israelites from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In Numbers 24, the prophet Balaam, who was summoned by Balak, the king of Moab, speaks a series of oracles or prophecies concerning Israel. These prophecies were given despite Balak’s attempts to have Balaam curse the Israelites.

Balaam’s Parable:In this verse, Balaam takes up his parable or prophecy and exclaims, “Alas, who shall live when God doeth this!” This statement reflects his awe and recognition of the power and authority of God. Balaam acknowledges that when God acts or fulfils His purposes, it can be a fearful and awe‑inspiring event.

Implication of God’s Actions:Balaam’s statement suggests that God’s actions have significant consequences. It reflects the understanding that God has the power to bring about both blessings and judgment upon individuals or nations. In the context of the prophecy, Balaam is speaking about the victories and triumphs of Israel over their enemies.

Application for Believers:This verse reminds believers of the sovereignty and power of God. It highlights the fact that God’s actions are not to be taken lightly and should invoke a sense of reverence and awe. It also emphasises the importance of recognising and aligning with God’s purposes, as seen in the case of the Israelites. Believers should trust in God’s ultimate plan, even when faced with challenges or opposition.

God’s Faithfulness:Throughout the book of Numbers, we see God’s faithfulness to His covenant with the Israelites. Despite Balak’s attempts to curse Israel, God’s plan and purpose prevailed. This verse serves as a reminder that God’s faithfulness endures and that He will accomplish His purposes in His time and way.

In conclusion, Numbers 24:23 emphasises the power and sovereignty of God. Balaam’s exclamation acknowledges the awe‑inspiring nature of God’s actions and highlights the consequences of His work. This verse reminds believers to trust in God’s faithfulness and align with His purposes, even in the face of challenges or opposition.
