Numbers 24:3

Posted on 23 January 2024
Listen to this article

“Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel: according to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought!”

Historical Context:The book of Numbers records the events that took place during the wilderness wanderings of the Israelites after their liberation from slavery in Egypt. In this particular instance, Balak sought Balaam’s help to curse the Israelites because he saw their growing numbers and feared their conquest.

Balaam’s Utterance:In his prophecy, Balaam affirms that no enchantment or divination could prevail against Jacob (Israel). Enchantment and divination refer to occult practices or attempts to manipulate or influence events through supernatural means. Balaam emphasizes that the Israelites are under God’s protection, making them impervious to the sorceries and divinations of others.

Divine Protection:Balaam acknowledges that the Israelites’ protection is not due to any inherent strength or power of their own but rather because of God’s intervention and favour. He declares, “according to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought!” This statement recognises that the astonishing victories and blessings bestowed upon the Israelites are the result of God’s mighty works on their behalf.

God’s Faithfulness:Balaam’s prophecy reinforces the faithfulness of God to His chosen people. Despite Balak’s attempts to curse them, God had predetermined to bless the Israelites. Balaam’s words remind us that God’s promises and blessings for His people are unshakable and cannot be thwarted by human schemes or occult practices.

Application:As Christians, we can draw several lessons from this verse. It teaches us that when we are in a right relationship with God and walking in His will, no enchantment or divination can harm us. God’s protection surrounds His people, and His plans for us cannot be hindered by external forces. It also serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness. We can trust in His promises and rely on His power, knowing that He is always working for our good.
