Numbers 24:5

Posted on 23 January 2024
Listen to this article

“How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O Israel!”

Context:Numbers 24:5 is part of a prophecy given by Balaam, a non-Israelite prophet, who was hired by King Balak of Moab to curse the Israelites. However, instead of cursing them, Balaam was divinely inspired by God to speak blessings over the people of Israel.

Meaning and Analysis: In this verse, Balaam expresses his awe and admiration for the dwellings of the Israelites. The phrase “How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O Israel!” signifies Balaam’s recognition of the beauty and favour upon the Israelite camp.

Jacob and Israel:Balaam addresses the people using both names, “Jacob” and “Israel.” “Jacob” refers to the patriarch of the Israelites, whose name was changed to Israel after his encounter with God (Genesis 32:28). The usage of both names highlights the connection between the people and their ancestral heritage.

Tents and Tabernacles:Balaam refers to the temporary dwellings of the Israelites. The “tents” symbolise their nomadic lifestyle during their journey through the wilderness, while the “tabernacles” represent the sacred dwelling place of God’s presence among them. The tabernacle was a portable sanctuary where the Israelites worshiped and encountered God.

Goodliness and Blessing:Balaam’s words convey a sense of admiration and blessing towards the Israelites. The phrase “How goodly” expresses his amazement at the beauty and orderliness of their encampment. Balaam recognises the divine favour and blessings upon the Israelites.

Spiritual Significance:Balaam’s words go beyond a mere observation of physical dwellings. They carry a spiritual significance as well. The tents and tabernacles symbolise the covenant relationship between God and His people. Balaam’s acknowledgment of their goodness signifies the spiritual prosperity and harmony found among the Israelites due to their obedience and faithfulness to God.

Lessons and Application:

  • Recognising God’s Blessings:Balaam’s words remind us to appreciate and acknowledge the blessings God has bestowed upon us. Whether in physical or spiritual aspects, we should take time to recognise His goodness and express gratitude for His favour in our lives.
  • Beauty in Obedience:The orderliness and beauty of the Israelite encampment reflect the importance of obedience and following God’s commands. When we align our lives with His will, it brings about a sense of harmony and spiritual prosperity.
  • Nomadic Journey:The Israelites’ journey through the wilderness symbolises our own journey as believers in this world. Like them, we may face challenges and uncertainties, but God’s presence and guidance are with us. We can find comfort in knowing that He provides for us and leads us through every season of life.
  • Covenant Relationship:Just as the tabernacle represented God’s dwelling among His people, we are reminded of our own relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. In the New Testament, Jesus is referred to as the “tabernacle” or “dwelling place” of God (John 1:14, Colossians 2:9). As believers, we carry the presence of God within us through the Holy Spirit.

In conclusion, Numbers 24:5 highlights Balaam’s admiration for the Israelite encampment and the blessings upon them. It reminds us to recognise God’s goodness in our lives, seek beauty through obedience, and remember our covenant relationship with Him.
