Numbers 25:17

Listen to this article

"Vex the Midianites, and smite them."

Context:The book of Numbers recounts the events that took place during the Israelites’ wilderness journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In Numbers 25, the Israelites had settled in the plains of Moab, near the Moabite king Balak. Balak was concerned about the Israelites’ numbers and feared they would conquer his land. Therefore, he attempted to curse them through the prophet Balaam, but God turned the curses into blessings. Frustrated, Balak employed another strategy to entice the Israelites to sin and provoke God’s anger.

Historical Background:

  • The Midianites were a neighbouring tribe of nomadic people who lived in the region east of Moab.
  • The Israelites had encountered the Midianites earlier when they left Egypt and journeyed through the wilderness.
  • The Midianites were influenced by Moab and played a role in leading the Israelites astray by tempting them to worship the Moabite gods (Numbers 25:1-2).

The Israelites’ Sin:

  • As the Israelites stayed in the plains of Moab, they began to indulge in sexual immorality with the Moabite women and worship their gods (Numbers 25:1-2).
  • This behaviour was a direct violation of God’s commandments and a betrayal of their covenant relationship with Him.

God’s Judgment:

  • In response to the Israelites’ sin, God’s anger burned against them. He commanded Moses to take the leaders of the people and execute them publicly as an act of judgment (Numbers 25:4-5).
  • While this judgment was taking place, an Israelite man brought a Midianite woman into his tent, openly defying God’s commandment.
  • Phinehas, the grandson of Aaron, saw this act and zealously executed both the Israelite man and the Midianite woman with a spear (Numbers 25:6-8).

God’s Covenant of Peace:

  • God commended Phinehas for his zealous action and his dedication to upholding God’s holiness (Numbers 25:10-13).
  • God then established a covenant of peace with Phinehas and his descendants, promising that they would always hold the priesthood and receive His blessing (Numbers 25:12-13).

Instruction to Vex and Smite the Midianites:

  • Following this incident, God commanded Moses to take revenge on the Midianites for their role in leading the Israelites into sin (Numbers 25:16-18).
  • The Israelites were to go to war against the Midianites and completely destroy them as a punishment for their actions.

Key Lessons:

  • The story in Numbers 25:17 reminds us of the consequences of disobedience and the seriousness of sin.
  • God expects His people to remain faithful to Him and not be led astray by worldly influences.
  • The account also emphasises the importance of zealously upholding God’s holiness and standing against sinful behaviour.
  • God rewards those who are faithful and zealous in their devotion to Him, as seen in His covenant of peace with Phinehas and his descendants.

Overall, Numbers 25:17 serves as a reminder that sin has consequences, and it underscores the significance of living in obedience to God’s commands and pursuing holiness.
