Listen to this article

“And the sons of Gilead; Iezer, and the sons of Iezer; Helek, and the sons of Helek; Asriel, and the sons of Asriel; Shechem, and the sons of Shechem; Shemida.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book in the Old Testament and primarily focuses on the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In this chapter, a census is taken to determine the number of Israelite men who are eligible for military service.

Gilead and his descendants:Gilead was a prominent figure in the tribe of Manasseh. He had several sons, and each son became the progenitor of a clan within the tribe.

The sons of Gilead:Iezer, Helek, Asriel, and Shechem were the sons of Gilead mentioned in Numbers 26:17. They were notable leaders and heads of clans within the tribe of Manasseh.

Significance of the names:In Hebrew culture, names often carried significant meanings. While the exact meanings of these names are not explicitly mentioned in this verse, we can explore possible interpretations based on other occurrences in the Bible. For example, “Iezer” means “God is help” or “whom God helps.” “Helek” can be translated as “portion” or “inheritance.” “Asriel” can mean “God’s assistance” or “God has helped.” “Shechem” could mean “back” or “shoulder” and might be associated with carrying burdens.

Spiritual lessons:

God’s provision:The names in this verse can remind us of God’s help and provision. Just as Iezer means “God is help,” we can find comfort in knowing that God is our helper in times of need.

Inheritance:The name Helek, meaning “portion” or “inheritance,” reminds us of the spiritual inheritance we have in Christ. As believers, we are heirs of God and joint‑heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17).

Dependence on God:The names Asriel and Shechem can remind us of our dependence on God’s assistance and the importance of casting our burdens upon Him. We are encouraged to trust in the Lord and lean not on our understanding (Proverbs 3:5‑6).

Family heritage:This verse emphasizes the family lineage and genealogy of the tribe of Manasseh. It highlights the importance of family and the way God works through generations to fulfill His purposes.

Overall, Numbers 26:17 serves as a reminder of God’s provision, our spiritual inheritance in Christ, and our dependence on Him. It also underscores the significance of family and the role it plays in God’s plan.
