Numbers 26:21

Posted on 24 January 2024
Listen to this article

“And the sons of Pharez were; of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites: of Hamul, the family of the Hamulites.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and provides an account of the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness. In Numbers 26, a census is conducted to count the new generation of Israelites who would enter the Promised Land after the previous generation died in the wilderness due to their disobedience.

The lineage of Pharez:Pharez was one of the twin sons of Judah, born through his relationship with Tamar (Genesis 38:27-30). The descendants of Pharez are mentioned here in Numbers 26:21.

Hezron and the Hezronites:Hezron was the son of Pharez, and his descendants are known as the Hezronites. Hezron’s line played a significant role in the genealogy of King David and, eventually, the lineage of Jesus Christ (Ruth 4:18-22, Matthew 1:3).

Hamul and the Hamulites:Hamul was another son of Pharez, and his descendants are referred to as the Hamulites. Not much information is provided about the Hamulites beyond their inclusion in the genealogical record.

Importance of genealogy:Genealogies play a vital role in the Bible, particularly in tracing the lineage of significant individuals and establishing their heritage. They help establish connections, fulfill prophecies, and highlight the faithfulness of God in preserving the promised line through which the Messiah would come.

Lessons for believers today:While the genealogy mentioned in Numbers 26:21 may seem less significant to us personally, it highlights God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. It reminds us of the intricate details and plan that God weaves throughout history, ultimately leading to the birth of Jesus Christ, our Savior.

Importance of individual faith:Although being part of a godly lineage or heritage is significant, it does not guarantee personal faith or salvation. Each individual is responsible for their own faith and relationship with God. We must not rely solely on our family background but seek a personal, genuine relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ.

In summary, Numbers 26:21 provides a glimpse into the lineage of Pharez, the son of Judah. It highlights the families of Hezron and Hamul, descendants of Pharez. While this genealogy may seem less applicable to us directly, it reminds us of God’s faithfulness in preserving the promised line leading to Jesus Christ, our Savior.
