Numbers 26:3

Posted on 24 January 2024
Listen to this article

“And Moses and Eleazar the priest spake with them in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying,”

Historical Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Old Testament and provides an account of the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. At this point in the narrative, the Israelites are encamped in the plains of Moab, preparing to enter the land of Canaan. Moses and Eleazar, the son of Aaron and the high priest after Aaron’s death, are addressing the congregation of Israel.

Moses and Eleazar:Moses, the great leader of the Israelites, had been chosen by God to lead them out of Egypt and through the wilderness. Eleazar was appointed as the high priest after the death of his father, Aaron. Moses and Eleazar served as spiritual leaders and intermediaries between God and the people.

Location and Audience:The interaction between Moses, Eleazar, and the people takes place in the plains of Moab by the Jordan River near Jericho. The people of Israel had arrived at the border of the Promised Land, and the census mentioned in the subsequent verses was conducted to determine the number of males eligible for military service.

Significance of the Census:The purpose of this census, as instructed by God, was to assess the strength and composition of the Israelite population. It was a way to organize the tribes and prepare for the conquest of Canaan. The census also had spiritual and symbolic significance as it revealed God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promise to multiply the descendants of Abraham.

God’s Faithfulness:Throughout the book of Numbers, we see God’s faithfulness to the Israelites despite their repeated grumbling, disobedience, and lack of faith. Despite their failures, God continued to guide them, provide for them, and lead them toward the Promised Land. The census served as a reminder that God was fulfilling His promise to make the descendants of Abraham into a great nation.

Preparation for the Promised Land:Conducting the census and organizing the people’s military potential demonstrated the practical preparations needed for the conquest of Canaan. This act showed the Israelites that they were nearing the fulfillment of God’s promise to give them the land He had sworn to their ancestors.

Lessons for Today:Numbers 26:3 reminds us of the importance of organisation, preparation, and assessing available resources when undertaking a significant task or mission. It also teaches us about God’s faithfulness and the significance of His promises. Just as God fulfilled His promises to the Israelites, we can trust in His faithfulness in our lives and rely on Him as we prepare for the challenges and opportunities He sets before us.

Remember, this verse is just a part of the larger narrative in the book of Numbers. To gain a deeper understanding of God’s dealings with the Israelites and the lessons for us today, it is beneficial to study the entire book in its context.
