Numbers 26:42

Posted on 26 January 2024
Listen to this article

"These are the sons of Dan after their families: of Shuham, the family of the Shuhamites. These are the families of Dan after their families."

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and provides an account of the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. The verse you mentioned is part of a chapter that lists the genealogies of the tribes of Israel, including the tribe of Dan.

The Tribe of Dan:Dan was one of the twelve tribes of Israel, and its name is derived from Jacob’s son Dan, who was born to Bilhah, Rachel’s maidservant. The tribe of Dan played a significant role in the history of Israel, but it also faced challenges and struggles along the way.

Genealogies:The book of Numbers contains various genealogical records that help trace the lineage of the twelve tribes. These records were important for several reasons, including establishing inheritance rights, determining the number of eligible men for military service, and ensuring the fulfilment of God’s promises concerning the land of Canaan.

Shuham and the Shuhamites:Numbers 26:42 mentions Shuham and the family of the Shuhamites as part of the tribe of Dan. Not much information is provided about Shuham or his family, and this is the only reference to them in the Bible. It’s possible that they were a prominent family within the tribe of Dan or had a specific role or significance during that time.

Significance and Application:While Numbers 26:42 may seem like a simple genealogical record, it reminds us of the importance of family and lineage within the context of Israel. Genealogies served to establish a sense of identity, belonging, and heritage among the people. They also reinforced God’s covenant promises to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

As we reflect on this verse, we can appreciate the meticulous nature of God’s record-keeping and His faithfulness to His promises. Furthermore, it reminds us of the significance of our own family histories and the importance of cherishing our heritage.

In a broader sense, this verse can encourage us to embrace and honour our own family backgrounds, recognising that God can work through ordinary people and families to accomplish His purposes. It reminds us that every individual has a role to play within the context of their family, community, and God’s greater plan.

Overall, Numbers 26:42 provides a glimpse into the genealogical records of the tribe of Dan and highlights the significance of family, lineage, and God’s faithfulness to His promises.
