Numbers 26:57

Listen to this article

“And these are they that were numbered of the Levites after their families: of Gershon, the family of the Gershonites: of Kohath, the family of the Kohathites: of Merari, the family of the Merarites.”

In the book of Numbers, chapter 26 provides a detailed account of the second census taken by Moses and Eleazar, the high priest, of the children of Israel while they were in the wilderness. The purpose of this census was to determine the number of men who were eligible for military service and to allocate the inheritance of the land that God had promised them.

Numbers 26:57 specifically focuses on the Levites, who were descendants of Levi, the son of Jacob. The Levites were set apart from the other tribes of Israel to serve in the tabernacle and assist the priests in their duties. They were not given a specific inheritance of land like the other tribes but were allocated cities and surrounding pasturelands throughout the territories of the other tribes.

The verse divides the Levites into three main families: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. These families were further subdivided into clans and households. Each family had specific responsibilities in the service of the tabernacle.

Gershon:The Gershonites were responsible for the care and transportation of the coverings, curtains, and hangings of the tabernacle (Numbers 3:21-26).

Kohath:The Kohathites were responsible for the most sacred items of the tabernacle, including the ark of the covenant, the table of showbread, the lampstand, the altars, and the utensils used in the sanctuary. However, they were not to touch these items directly but were to cover them securely before transportation (Numbers 3:27-32).

Merari:The Merarites were responsible for the structural components of the tabernacle, including the boards, bars, pillars, sockets, and other equipment (Numbers 3:33-37).

The enumeration of these Levite families in Numbers 26:57 highlights the organisation and order that God established among the Levites for the smooth functioning of the tabernacle and the preservation of its holiness. Each family had a specific role to play in the service of God’s dwelling place among the Israelites.

This verse also emphasises the importance of every individual and family within the community. Each person had a vital part to fulfil within their designated family and tribe. God’s purpose was to unite the people of Israel and provide for their spiritual needs through the service of the Levites.

In summary, Numbers 26:57 sheds light on the roles and responsibilities of the Levites within the tabernacle. It demonstrates God’s desire for order and organisation in His worship and emphasises the significance of every individual’s contribution to the community.
