Numbers 27:22

Posted on 26 January 2024
Listen to this article

“And Moses did as the LORD commanded him: and he took Joshua, and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and continues the narrative of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. In Numbers 27, we find the story of Moses being informed by God about his impending death and the appointment of Joshua as his successor.

God’s command to Moses:In this verse, it is stated that Moses obeyed the command of the Lord. God instructed Moses to take Joshua and present him before Eleazar the priest and the entire congregation. This command marked the official appointment of Joshua as the new leader of the Israelites after Moses’ death.

Moses’ obedience:Moses faithfully carried out the command of the Lord. His obedience to God’s instruction is commendable. It demonstrates his humility, submission to God’s authority, and his desire to fulfill God’s will for the people of Israel. Moses understood that his role as a leader was coming to an end, and he willingly followed God’s plan for succession.

Joshua’s appointment:Joshua was chosen by God to succeed Moses as the leader of the Israelites. This appointment was not made by Moses or any human authority but was a direct result of God’s command. Joshua had been Moses’ faithful assistant and had shown great courage, faith, and leadership throughout their journey in the wilderness.

Eleazar the priest:Eleazar was the son of Aaron, Moses’ brother, and had succeeded Aaron as the high priest of Israel. The placement of Joshua before Eleazar implies a symbolic transfer of leadership from Moses to Joshua, with the priestly authority represented by Eleazar.

Significance:Numbers 27:22 highlights the orderly transition of leadership within the Israelite community. It shows God’s guidance and provision for the people, even in the face of leadership changes. It also serves as a reminder that God is the ultimate authority in appointing leaders and that His plans and purposes are greater than any individual’s role.

Application:From this verse, we can learn the importance of obedience to God’s commands, even in times of transition or change. Just as Moses obeyed God’s instruction, we should seek to align our lives with His will and follow His guidance. Additionally, this verse emphasizes the significance of humble submission to God’s authority and recognizing His sovereign plan for our lives.

In conclusion, Numbers 27:22 portrays Moses’ obedience to God’s command to appoint Joshua as his successor. It demonstrates the orderly transition of leadership and highlights the importance of obedience, submission, and recognizing God’s authority in our lives.
