Numbers 28:22

Listen to this article

“And one goat for a sin offering unto the LORD shall be offered, beside the continual burnt offering, and his drink offering.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Old Testament and contains the account of Israel’s journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. It primarily focuses on the organisation, laws, and regulations given to the Israelites by God through Moses.

In Numbers 28, God provides instructions to Moses concerning the offerings and sacrifices that the Israelites were to present at specific times. This chapter specifically outlines the daily offerings, Sabbath offerings, monthly offerings, and offerings for the appointed feasts.

Now let’s analyze Numbers 28:22 in more detail:

  • Sin Offering:The verse begins by mentioning the offering of one goat as a sin offering unto the Lord. The sin offering was a significant part of the Israelite sacrificial system, intended to provide atonement for unintentional sins committed by the people. It symbolised the need for cleansing and reconciliation with God.
  • Continual Burnt Offering:The verse also refers to the “continual burnt offering.” This was a daily offering presented in the morning and evening, which represented the complete devotion and surrender of the people to God. The burnt offering signified worship, commitment, and the acknowledgement of God’s sovereignty.
  • Drink Offering:Additionally, the verse mentions the “drink offering” that accompanied the burnt offering. The drink offering consisted of pouring out wine or a liquid offering as a symbol of dedication and gratitude to God.

This verse highlights the importance of offering sacrifices and offerings as prescribed by God. The sin offering demonstrated the need for atonement and forgiveness, while the burnt offering and drink offering emphasised worship, consecration, and acknowledgement of God’s authority.

For the Israelites, these offerings were a tangible way to demonstrate their faith, obedience, and dependence on God. They also pointed to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who became the perfect and final offering for the sins of humanity.

In summary, Numbers 28:22 presents the instructions regarding a sin offering, the continual burnt offering, and the drink offering. These offerings played a crucial role in the religious practices of the Israelites, symbolising atonement, worship, dedication, and gratitude towards God.
