Listen to this article

“And their meat offering of flour mingled with oil, three tenth deals unto one bullock, two tenth deals unto one ram,”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Old Testament and primarily focuses on the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. It contains various laws, regulations, and instructions given by God to the Israelites through Moses.

Offerings in the Tabernacle:Numbers 28 provides a detailed account of the daily, Sabbath, monthly, and yearly offerings that the Israelites were commanded to present to God at the Tabernacle. These offerings included both animal sacrifices and grain offerings.

The Verse in Focus:Numbers 28:28 specifically pertains to the daily offering of flour mingled with oil. It specifies the quantity of the offering to be presented for different animals brought as sacrifices. In this verse, it mentions the measurements of flour and oil for one bullock and one ram.

Symbolism and Meaning:

  • a. Meat Offering: The meat offering mentioned here is not referring to animal flesh but rather to a grain offering made from flour and oil. This offering was significant in expressing gratitude, dedication, and worship to God.
  • b. Flour and Oil: Flour symbolises the sustenance and provision that comes from God. Oil, often associated with anointing, represents the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. The combination of flour and oil signifies the offerings made with sincerity and devotion.
  • c. Quantities: The specific measurements of three-tenth deals of flour to one bullock and two-tenth deals to one ram demonstrate the meticulousness and precision required in the offerings brought before God. It emphasises the importance of giving God the best of one’s resources.

Spiritual Application:

  • Gratitude and Dedication:The daily offering of flour mingled with oil reminds us of the importance of expressing gratitude to God for His provision and dedicating our lives to Him. Just as the Israelites offered these sacrifices, we are called to offer our lives as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God (Romans 12:1).
  • Faithfulness in Giving:The detailed instructions regarding the quantities of the offering highlight the principle of faithful stewardship. God desires us to give Him our best, whether it be our time, talents, or resources. It encourages us to be intentional and generous in our worship and service to God.
  • The Role of the Holy Spirit:The presence of oil in the offering signifies the importance of the Holy Spirit in our lives. As believers, we rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance, empowerment, and anointing. It serves as a reminder to seek the leading of the Holy Spirit in all aspects of our lives.

In conclusion, Numbers 28:28 provides insight into the daily offerings required by God from the Israelites. It teaches us the significance of expressing gratitude, dedicating our lives to God, and giving our best to Him. Moreover, it reminds us of the role of the Holy Spirit in our spiritual journey.
