Numbers 29:18

Listen to this article

“And their meat offering and their drink offerings for the bullocks, for the rams, and for the lambs, shall be according to their number, after the manner.”

Context:The book of Numbers is part of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible, and it specifically focuses on the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In this verse, Moses is instructing the Israelites regarding the offerings they were to bring during the Feast of Tabernacles (also known as the Feast of Booths).

Feast of Tabernacles:The Feast of Tabernacles was one of the annual festivals ordained by God for the Israelites. It was a week-long celebration that commemorated God’s provision and protection during their wilderness journey. The offerings mentioned in Numbers 29:18 were part of the sacrificial system associated with this feast.

Meat Offering and Drink Offering:In the Old Testament, along with animal sacrifices, there were also accompanying offerings of grain and drink. These offerings were symbolic and held specific meanings. The meat offering consisted of grain, usually in the form of fine flour, mixed with oil and frankincense. The drink offering involved pouring out a specified amount of wine. These offerings were presented to God as an act of worship and gratitude.

According to Their Number:The verse emphasizes that the quantity of the meat and drink offerings was to correspond with the number of animals being sacrificed. This demonstrates the principle of proportionality in the offerings. The Israelites were to offer these sacrifices in a manner consistent with the size and scale of the offering. This ensured that the worship of God was done with reverence and order.

Reverence and Order:Throughout the Old Testament, God instructed the Israelites to approach Him with reverence and follow specific guidelines for worship. This included offering sacrifices and observing holy feasts. By adhering to the prescribed instructions for the offerings, the Israelites demonstrated their obedience and respect for God.

Faithfulness in Worship:The Israelites’ commitment to offering the appropriate sacrifices according to their number teaches us the importance of faithfulness in our worship of God. It reminds us to give our best and to honor God with the resources and offerings we bring before Him.

Proportional Giving:The principle of proportionality displayed in this verse can be applied to our lives today. Just as the Israelites offered sacrifices in proportion to the number of animals, we can apply this principle to our financial giving. We are encouraged to give generously and proportionally, according to what God has blessed us with, in our offerings to the church and in supporting those in need.

Order and Reverence:The emphasis on order and reverence in worship serves as a reminder for us to approach God with awe and respect. While our worship practices may differ from those of the Israelites in the Old Testament, we should maintain an attitude of reverence and honor when we gather to worship God. This involves following the principles and guidelines provided in Scripture and engaging in worship with sincerity and devotion.

Conclusion:Numbers 29:18 highlights the offerings the Israelites were to bring during the Feast of Tabernacles. It emphasizes the principle of proportionality and the importance of approaching God with reverence and order in worship. As we study this verse, we can draw lessons about faithfulness in worship, proportional giving, and maintaining an attitude of reverence and honor in our relationship with God.
