Numbers 29:9

Posted on 29 January 2024
Listen to this article

“And their meat offering shall be of flour mingled with oil, three tenth deals to a bullock, and two tenth deals to one ram,”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and focuses on the journey of the Israelites through the wilderness. It contains various laws, instructions, and accounts of their experiences. In Numbers 29, God instructs Moses regarding the offerings and sacrifices to be made during the appointed feasts, specifically the Feast of Trumpets.

Meaning and Significance: Numbers 29:9 refers to the meat (grain) offering that was to be presented to God during the Feast of Trumpets. The Feast of Trumpets, also known as Rosh Hashanah, marked the beginning of the Jewish civil year and was a time of celebration and preparation for the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur).

Offering:The verse specifies the meat (grain) offering to be presented to God during the Feast of Trumpets. This offering consisted of flour mixed with oil. It symbolized the people’s gratitude and devotion to God, acknowledging His provision and lordship over their lives. The grain offering was a way for the Israelites to give a portion of their harvest back to God, recognizing His role as the ultimate provider.

Measurements:The verse provides specific measurements for the meat (grain) offering. It mentions three-tenth deals of flour mixed with oil for each bullock and two-tenth deals for each ram. These measurements were precise and regulated, emphasizing the importance of offering God the proper proportions and quantities. It reflected the Israelites’ obedience to God’s instructions and their desire to worship Him with reverence.

Symbolism:The grain offering represented more than just an act of giving food. It was a symbol of dedication, consecration, and surrender to God. Flour, which is the result of grinding wheat, represents the process of refinement and transformation. Oil often symbolizes the Holy Spirit’s anointing and empowerment. By offering flour mixed with oil, the Israelites were acknowledging their need for God’s refining work in their lives and their dependence on the Holy Spirit for guidance and empowerment.

Application:While the specific instructions in Numbers 29:9 were given to the Israelites for their observance of the Feast of Trumpets, we can draw some general principles from this verse for our lives today. It reminds us of the importance of offering ourselves to God with gratitude, devotion, and obedience. Just as the Israelites presented their grain offering, we can offer our time, talents, and resources to God as a demonstration of our love and commitment to Him.

Additionally, the measurements in the verse teach us the value of giving our best to God. It encourages us to be intentional and precise in our worship, offering Him the proper proportions of our resources and dedicating ourselves fully to Him.

In conclusion, Numbers 29:9 teaches us about the meat (grain) offering to be presented during the Feast of Trumpets. It highlights the significance of offering ourselves to God with gratitude and obedience, giving our best and acknowledging His provision and lordship over our lives.
