Numbers 3:19

Posted on 11 November 2023
Listen to this article

“And the sons of Kohath by their families; Amram, and Izehar, Hebron, and Uzziel.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible, and it primarily focuses on the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness after their liberation from Egypt. The book provides a detailed account of various aspects of their journey, including their organisation, laws, and instructions from God.

The Kohathites:In this verse, the focus is on the sons of Kohath, who was one of the sons of Levi. The Levites were set apart by God to serve in the tabernacle and assist the priests in their duties. The Kohathites had a specific role within the Levitical tribe, and they were responsible for the care and transportation of the sacred objects and furnishings of the tabernacle, including the ark of the covenant.

Family Names:The verse mentions four family names within the Kohathite clan: Amram, Izehar, Hebron, and Uzziel. These names represent the descendants of Kohath and indicate the subdivisions or branches of the Kohathite family. Each family had its own specific duties and responsibilities concerning the transportation and care of the holy items during the Israelites’ journeys.

Importance of Order and Organisation:The detailed listing of the families and their responsibilities highlights the importance of order and organisation within the community of Israel. God wanted everything to be done properly and in an orderly manner, especially when it came to matters related to the tabernacle and worship. This emphasis on order and organisation is a recurring theme throughout the book of Numbers, as God establishes the structure and roles of the different tribes and families.

Lessons for us today:While the specific instructions given to the Israelites in Numbers may not directly apply to us today, there are valuable lessons we can glean from this verse and the book as a whole. It reminds us of the importance of order, structure, and organisation in our lives and communities. God desires us to carry out our responsibilities diligently and with a sense of order, whether it is in our families, workplaces, or places of worship. Additionally, we are reminded of the significance of fulfilling our assigned roles and serving God and others faithfully.

In summary, Numbers 3:19 provides a glimpse into the organisation and responsibilities of the Kohathite family within the tribe of Levi. It emphasises the importance of order, structure, and organisation in carrying out God’s purposes. We can learn from this verse by applying the principles of diligence, faithfulness, and proper organisation in our own lives today.
