Numbers 3:21

Posted on 11 November 2023
Listen to this article

“Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites, and the family of the Shimites: these are the families of the Gershonites.”

Context:The book of Numbers is part of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible, and it primarily focuses on the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In this specific verse, the focus is on the descendants of Gershon, who was one of the sons of Levi.

The Gershonites:The Gershonites were one of the three major clans within the tribe of Levi, the tribe set apart for the service of God and the priesthood. The other two clans were the Kohathites and the Merarites. Each clan had specific responsibilities related to the Tabernacle, which was the portable sanctuary used by the Israelites during their desert wanderings.

Responsibilities of the Gershonites:The Gershonites were responsible for the transportation and care of the curtains, coverings, and hangings of the Tabernacle, as well as the cords, pegs, and other related items (Numbers 3:25-26). They were to carry these items whenever the Israelites needed to move the Tabernacle from one location to another.

Family divisions:Within the Gershonites, two specific families are mentioned in Numbers 3:21-the Libnites and the Shimites. These were subdivisions or branches within the Gershonite clan, which helped organize and distribute their responsibilities effectively.

The significance:This verse emphasizes the organisation and orderliness in which the responsibilities of the Tabernacle were divided among the various clans and families. The detailed instructions regarding the roles and duties of each group demonstrated God’s meticulous planning and desire for things to be done in a specific manner.

Lessons for us today:While the specific duties described in Numbers 3:21 may not directly apply to our lives today, we can still draw valuable lessons from this verse. It highlights the importance of order, teamwork, and proper organisation within the community of believers. Just as the Gershonites had specific roles, each member of the body of Christ has unique gifts and responsibilities to contribute to the functioning of the Church.

Additionally, this verse reminds us that God values every individual and their contribution, regardless of their specific role. The Gershonites’ tasks may not have seemed as glamorous or prominent as the priestly duties of the Kohathites, but they were vital for the smooth operation of the Tabernacle. Similarly, our seemingly small or behind-the-scenes contributions can play a significant role in advancing God’s Kingdom.

In conclusion, Numbers 3:21 sheds light on the division of responsibilities within the tribe of Levi and highlights the importance of organisation and orderliness in carrying out God’s work. It reminds us that every member of the community of believers has a unique role to play, and our contributions, no matter how small, are valuable in the eyes of God.
