Numbers 3:22

Listen to this article

“Take also the sum of the sons of Gershon, throughout the houses of their fathers, by their families.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Old Testament and it focuses on the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. It contains various laws, genealogies, and accounts of the Israelites’ experiences in the wilderness.

Sons of Gershon:The verse specifically refers to the sons of Gershon. Gershon was one of the three sons of Levi, who was the third son of Jacob. The Levites were set apart by God to serve in the tabernacle and assist the priests in their duties.

Census:The phrase “Take also the sum” indicates that a census was being conducted. God commanded Moses and Aaron to take a census of the Levites, specifically the sons of Gershon, to determine their numbers and to assign them their duties and responsibilities in the tabernacle.

House of their fathers:The census was conducted by counting the sons of Gershon throughout the houses of their fathers, which means that each family unit was accounted for separately. This indicates the importance of maintaining accurate records and organisation within the tribe of Levi.

Families:The sons of Gershon were organised into different families or clans. Each family had its own specific responsibilities and tasks related to the transportation and maintenance of the tabernacle and its various components. This census helped in assigning their respective roles and duties.

Lessons for us:Although this verse may seem specific to the context of the Israelites in the wilderness, it highlights the importance of order, organisation, and accountability. The careful record-keeping and structuring of responsibilities within the tribe of Levi reflect the value God places on order and structure within His people.

Application:As believers today, we can learn from this passage by recognising the significance of organisation and accountability within the church and other areas of our lives. It reminds us to be diligent in our responsibilities, maintain accurate records, and work together in unity for the smooth functioning of the body of Christ.

In conclusion, Numbers 3:22 teaches us the importance of order, organisation, and accountability as seen in the census of the sons of Gershon. It reminds us to value structure and unity, both in our spiritual lives and in the various responsibilities we undertake.
