Numbers 3:24

Posted on 11 November 2023
Listen to this article

“And the chief of the house of the father of the Gershonites shall be Eliasaph the son of Lael.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and primarily focuses on the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. It contains various census records, instructions regarding the organisation of the tribes, and laws given by God to the people through Moses.

The Gershonites:In Numbers 3, God commands Moses to conduct a census of the Levites, the tribe dedicated to serving in the tabernacle. The Gershonites were one of the three families within the Levites, along with the Kohathites and the Merarites. The Gershonites were responsible for transporting and caring for the curtains, hangings, and coverings of the tabernacle (Numbers 3:25-26).

Leadership:In Numbers 3:24, Eliasaph is appointed as the chief or leader of the Gershonites. He is mentioned as the son of Lael, indicating his lineage within the tribe of Gershon. As the chief, Eliasaph would have had the responsibility of overseeing the tasks assigned to the Gershonite clan and ensuring the proper handling and transportation of the tabernacle components.

Importance of Leadership:The appointment of Eliasaph as the chief of the Gershonites highlights the significance of leadership within God’s plan. Throughout the Bible, we see that God establishes leaders to guide and direct His people. In this instance, God chose Eliasaph to provide leadership and ensure the orderly functioning of the Gershonites in their service to the tabernacle.

Lessons for us:Although Numbers 3:24 is a specific instruction given to the Israelites during their wilderness journey, it offers some valuable lessons for us today. It reminds us of the importance of leadership within the community of believers. Just as Eliasaph was appointed to guide and oversee the tasks of the Gershonites, leaders in our churches and organisations have a responsibility to lead with integrity, humility, and a heart for service. They are called to provide direction, support, and nurture the spiritual growth of those under their care.

Submission and Service:Additionally, Numbers 3:24 emphasises the importance of each person fulfilling their assigned role within the body of Christ. The Gershonites had a specific task to perform in service to God’s dwelling place, and their leader, Eliasaph, was responsible for ensuring its proper execution. Similarly, as followers of Christ, we are called to discover and fulfil our unique roles within the church and the world, using our gifts and talents to serve God and others faithfully.
