Numbers 3:34

Posted on 11 November 2023
Listen to this article

“And those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, were six thousand and two hundred.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible and continues the narrative of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. It primarily focuses on the organization and numbering of the twelve tribes of Israel.

The Levites:In Numbers chapter 3, God commands Moses to take a census of the Levites, who were set apart for service in the tabernacle. The Levites were not counted among the other tribes, as they had specific duties related to the tabernacle and the worship of God.

Numbering of the Levites:In verse 15, it is mentioned that the total number of Levite males from a month old and upward was 22,000. However, Numbers 3:34 specifically refers to the Levites who were between the ages of one month and one year old. The verse states that there were 6,200 Levite males within this age range.

Symbolic Meaning:The numbering of the Levites and the specific mention of the infants within that count highlights the importance of consecration and dedication to God’s service from a young age. It demonstrates that even the very young are included in God’s plans and purposes.

Lessons for us:This passage reminds us of the significance of early spiritual nurturing and training. Just as the Levite infants were set apart for service to God, we should strive to raise children in the fear and knowledge of the Lord. Proverbs 22:6 encourages parents to “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

The Principle of Stewardship:The numbering of the Levites also emphasizes the principle of stewardship. The Levites were responsible for the care and transportation of the tabernacle, as well as assisting the priests in their duties. Likewise, as believers today, we are called to be faithful stewards of the resources, gifts, and talents that God has entrusted to us.

God’s Faithfulness:Finally, this passage reminds us of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. Despite the challenges and uncertainties the Israelites faced in the wilderness, God continued to provide for and preserve His people. The numbering of the Levites demonstrates God’s meticulous attention to detail and His faithfulness in carrying out His plans.

In conclusion, Numbers 3:34 provides a glimpse into the numbering of the Levites, specifically the infants within that count. It highlights the importance of consecration from a young age and teaches us lessons about spiritual nurturing, stewardship, and God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His purposes.
