Numbers 3:39

Posted on 11 November 2023
Listen to this article

"All that were numbered of the Levites, which Moses and Aaron numbered at the commandment of the LORD, throughout their families, all the males from a month old and upward, were twenty and two thousand."

Numbers 3:39 is part of the larger context of the book of Numbers, which primarily deals with the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness after their deliverance from slavery in Egypt. In this specific verse, the focus is on the Levites, who were set apart by God to serve as priests and assist the priests from the tribe of Aaron in the Tabernacle.

The Levites and their numbering:In this verse, it is mentioned that Moses and Aaron numbered the Levites. This refers to the census conducted to determine the number of Levite males who were eligible for priestly service. The Levites were not included in the general census of the other tribes because they had a special role within the religious system of Israel.

The Levites’ age requirement:According to Numbers 3:39, all the males from a month old and upward were included in the numbering. This indicates that even newborn Levite males were considered part of the Levitical priesthood, although their service would not begin until they reached an appropriate age.

The total number of Levites:The verse states that the number of Levites, from a month old and upward, was twenty-two thousand. This figure represents the number of Levite males who were available for service in the Tabernacle. It is important to note that this number excludes the Levites who were specifically assigned to the priestly duties, as they were descendants of Aaron and belonged to the priestly line.

Significance of the Levites:The Levites were chosen by God to assist in the duties related to the Tabernacle and the worship of Israel. Their responsibilities included setting up and dismantling the Tabernacle, transporting the sacred items, and performing various tasks necessary for the proper functioning of the religious rituals. They were not only responsible for the physical aspects but also played a role in instructing the people in matters of faith and worship.

This verse highlights the meticulous organisation and preparation required for the worship system established by God for the Israelites. It emphasises the importance of the Levites in fulfilling their designated roles within the community, contributing to the orderly functioning of the religious practices.

Overall, Numbers 3:39 provides a glimpse into the specific duties and responsibilities assigned to the Levites, demonstrating God’s divine plan for their service in the religious life of Israel during their wilderness journey.
