Numbers 31:15

Posted on 29 February 2024
Listen to this article

“And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive?”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Old Testament and continues the narrative of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. In this particular passage, the Israelites had just completed a military campaign against the Midianites, as commanded by God through Moses. After the battle, Moses confronts the leaders of the Israelite army regarding the treatment of the captured women.

Analysis:

  • The command to destroy the Midianites:Prior to this verse, God had instructed Moses to avenge the Israelites on the Midianites for leading them into idolatry and sexual immorality (Numbers 25:16-18). Thus, the Israelites engaged in a military campaign to carry out God’s judgment against the Midianites.
  • The issue of preserving women alive:When Moses sees that the Israelite soldiers spared the women alive, he questions their actions. This suggests that the Israelite soldiers deviated from God’s command to completely destroy the Midianites, including women.
  • Understanding the historical and cultural context:It is important to note that during this time in history, capturing women from defeated nations was a common practice. In many cases, captured women were taken as slaves or concubines. However, Moses is concerned about the implications of this action and the potential for idolatry and immorality to spread among the Israelites.
  • Moses’ concern for fidelity to God’s command:Moses, as the leader appointed by God, holds the responsibility of upholding God’s laws and ensuring the Israelites’ obedience. By questioning the soldiers about sparing the women, Moses seeks to correct their behavior and reinforce the importance of obedience to God’s commands.
  • The broader theological principles:This passage highlights the significance of obeying God’s commands without compromise. It serves as a reminder that partial obedience is not acceptable in God’s sight. The Israelites were chosen to be a holy nation, and their faithfulness to God required obedience in all aspects of their lives.

Application:This passage prompts us to reflect on our own obedience to God’s commands. It reminds us of the importance of not compromising our faith or engaging in practices that go against God’s will. We are called to be faithful and obedient in all areas of our lives, even when faced with difficult choices or societal pressures.

Additionally, it reminds us to seek guidance from godly leaders and mentors who can help us discern God’s will and hold us accountable in our walk of faith. Just as Moses questioned the Israelite soldiers, we should surround ourselves with individuals who will challenge us to live in accordance with God’s Word.

In conclusion, Numbers 31:15 serves as a reminder of the importance of complete obedience to God’s commands and the need for accountability in our faith journey. It encourages us to examine our own lives and strive for wholehearted devotion to God in every aspect.
