“And Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses”

Historical Context:In Numbers 31, we find the account of the Israelites’ war against the Midianites. The Midianites had seduced the Israelites into engaging in idolatry and sexual immorality, which resulted in God’s anger being kindled against them. Therefore, the Lord commanded Moses to take vengeance on the Midianites. After the victory, Moses and Eleazar the priest had the responsibility of dividing the spoils and carrying out God’s instructions.

Obedience to God’s Commands:The key aspect highlighted in Numbers 31:31 is the obedience of Moses and Eleazar. They did precisely what the Lord commanded them to do. This verse emphasizes the importance of following God’s instructions faithfully. Moses, as the leader of the Israelites, demonstrated his commitment to obedience, and Eleazar, as the high priest, played a significant role in carrying out God’s commands.

Trusting God’s Wisdom:The obedience shown by Moses and Eleazar reveals their trust in God’s wisdom and judgment. They didn’t question or deviate from God’s instructions, recognizing that His commands were just and righteous. Their obedience demonstrated their faith in God’s sovereignty and their willingness to submit to His authority.

Application:

  • Obedience to God: Numbers 31:31 serves as a reminder to us today that obedience to God is essential. As believers, we should strive to follow God’s commands and trust in His wisdom, even when we may not fully understand His plans.
  • Trusting God’s Sovereignty: Moses and Eleazar’s obedience highlights the importance of trusting in God’s sovereignty. Even in challenging circumstances, we can have confidence in His guidance and wisdom, knowing that He works all things for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28).
  • Faithfulness in Leadership: Moses’ obedience is exemplary for leaders. As leaders in our respective roles, we should seek to lead with integrity, faithfully following and executing God’s commands.
  • Seeking God’s Will: This verse reminds us to seek God’s will in our lives and to respond obediently to His guidance. Through prayer, reading His Word, and relying on the Holy Spirit’s leading, we can discern and follow God’s instructions for us.
