Numbers 31:40

Posted on 29 February 2024
Listen to this article

“And the persons were sixteen thousand; of which the LORD’s tribute was thirty and two persons.”

Context:Numbers 31 describes the account of the Israelites’ war against the Midianites. The Lord commanded Moses to avenge the Israelites for the deceitful actions of the Midianites, who had led the Israelites into idolatry and sexual immorality. The Israelites were successful in their battle against the Midianites, and they brought back spoils of war, including captives, livestock, and other possessions.

The number of persons:In Numbers 31:40, it is mentioned that out of the spoils of war, the Israelites took sixteen thousand persons. These persons were most likely captives from the Midianite camp who survived the battle. It is important to note that the capture of these individuals was in accordance with the laws and customs of warfare prevalent during that time.

The Lord’s tribute:The verse also states that the Lord’s tribute from the captured persons was thirty-two individuals. The “tribute” refers to the portion of the spoils of war that was dedicated to the Lord. It was a form of offering or giving back to God. In this case, the tribute was in the form of the captured individuals.

Symbolic significance:The capture of the sixteen thousand persons and the dedication of thirty-two of them as the Lord’s tribute carry symbolic significance. The large number of captives reflects the victory and military strength of the Israelites over their enemies. The small portion set aside for the Lord’s tribute demonstrates the Israelites’ acknowledgment that their victory was ultimately attributed to God’s power and intervention.

Lessons for us:While the context of Numbers 31 primarily deals with a historical event, there are some broader principles that can be derived from this passage. It teaches us the importance of acknowledging God’s role in our victories and successes. It reminds us that even in times of personal triumph, we should not forget to offer gratitude and give back to God, recognizing that our achievements are ultimately a result of His blessings and guidance.

Application:In our lives, we can apply the principles from Numbers 31:40 by cultivating a heart of gratitude and offering our successes and achievements to God. This can be done through prayer, thanksgiving, and using our resources, time, and talents to further God’s kingdom and bless others. It reminds us to maintain humility and not to become prideful or self-centered in our accomplishments, but rather to honor and acknowledge the Lord.

Remember that a comprehensive understanding of any biblical passage requires considering its context and examining other related verses and passages. Bible commentaries, study Bibles, and consulting with pastors or biblical scholars can provide further insights and deeper understanding of the Scripture.
